St. George podiatrist lauds new Utah initiative to help powersports riders access protective gear, citing the risks of foot and ankle injuries.

Foot & Ankle Center, a podiatry practice with locations in St. George, Utah, and Mesquite, Nevada, is highlighting a new statewide effort to get protective gear into the hands of powersports riders before they ever start the engine. The Gear Up and Go program, launched this month by Young Powersports, University of Utah Health, and Mountain America Credit Union, gives every customer who finances a new powersports vehicle through the credit union a $200 voucher toward helmets, boots, riding pants, and other safety equipment.¹ Alongside this announcement, Foot & Ankle Center is renewing its own message that proper footwear can help prevent a serious foot or ankle injury.
Dr. Landon Cameron, DPM, FACFAS, has practiced podiatry in Southern Utah and Nevada since 2016 and regularly treats foot and ankle injuries stemming from falls, crashes, and other high-impact accidents. He favors a conservative approach, weighing non-surgical options before recommending surgery for conditions that range from stress fractures to Achilles tendon injuries. As a foot doctor practicing in St. George and Mesquite, Dr. Cameron sees sports- and recreation-related foot and ankle injuries regularly, giving him a close view of how a rider's gear can shape the outcome of a crash.
Gear Up and Go targets a common gap in powersports safety: riders often focus on helmets and gloves, letting protective gear for the feet become an afterthought. Feet are closest to the ground and often absorb the initial impact of a fall. One NHTSA analysis of motorcyclists treated at trauma centers found that foot and ankle injuries combined account for 20 percent of the moderate-to-severe lower-extremity injuries riders sustain in crashes.²
"Proper footwear is one of the simplest ways for riders to lower their risk of a serious foot and ankle injury," said Dr. Cameron. "A well-fitted, over-the-ankle boot can make the difference between a sprain and a fracture when a rider goes down. Programs like Gear Up and Go make it easier to walk out with the right boots on day one instead of waiting until after a close call."
Foot & Ankle Center treats a wide range of foot and ankle conditions, from sports injuries and stress fractures to bunions and plantar fasciitis, using conservative therapies where appropriate. As Gear Up and Go rolls out across Utah, Dr. Cameron and his team encourage powersports riders of every experience level to treat protective footwear as part of the vehicle purchase and as an investment in their safety.
