Local HVAC expert shares three simple steps homeowners can take to avoid sudden A/C breakdowns during triple-digit temperatures
Saginaw, TX (PRUnderground) June 28th, 2026
With North Texas bracing for triple-digit temperatures and high winds this week, local HVAC professionals are urging Saginaw homeowners to take immediate steps to protect their air conditioning systems. The combination of extreme heat and blowing debris can quickly overwhelm outdoor units, leading to unexpected and costly breakdowns during the peak of summer.
Strong winds can force loose dirt, dust, and fresh lawn clippings directly into outdoor A/C condensers. This debris creates a thick buildup that restricts critical airflow, preventing the system from cooling the home efficiently. As a result, units are forced to work twice as hard, often causing them to overheat and fail during the hottest hours of the day.
Eric Villarreal, owner of Service Champs Heating & Air, has been servicing North Texas HVAC systems for more than 15 years and knows firsthand how punishing local summers can be.
“Dirty condenser coils are one of the leading causes of system failure,” says Villarreal. “When the wind packs dirt and debris into the unit, it restricts airflow and forces the compressor to work under extreme stress. This frequently results in expensive, avoidable breakdowns during one of the hottest weeks of the year.”
To help homeowners avoid an emergency repair call, Villarreal recommends taking three simple preventative steps before the heatwave arrives:
- Clear the Area Around the Outdoor Unit: Maintain at least a two-foot clearance around your outdoor condenser. Trim back tall grass, weeds, and nearby bushes to ensure unobstructed airflow.
- Gently Rinse the Coils: Turn off the power to your AC system at the outdoor breaker. Use a standard garden hose to gently rinse away accumulated dirt from the outside coils. Note: Never use a pressure washer, as the high pressure will bend and permanently damage the delicate aluminum fins.
- Replace the Indoor Air Filter: A clean indoor filter ensures optimal airflow throughout the home. Checking and replacing a dirty filter is the easiest and most effective way to reduce strain on your A/C unit.
